“Genre conventions are all the little parts of the genre such as character similarities and repeated plots that allow us to distinguish between genres” (Prezi.com, Nick Viewig, 2012)

Architectural photography conventions seen in these images would be the use of black and white, the low angle and leading lines. Often in architectural photography, the image is taken from below and a common theme explored is close ups of the architecture and this allows the viewer to appreciate the lines, shapes and shadows and also creates an intrigue into what you are looking at, adding an abstract element into it.

“Documentary photography is a style of photography that provides a straightforward and accurate representation of people, places, objects and events, and is often used in reportage.” (Documentary photography – Art term | Tate)

These photos of Lincoln Pride fall into the genre of documentary photography and that can be made obvious through genre conventions such as candid people, social, political and cultural meaning in the content of the image because of how its a celebratory movement for the LGBTQ+ community. I’ve frequently found in documentary photography examples, especially photojournalism, is exploitation rather than celebration within the image and on a broader sense of what the images are saying.

Studio Fashion Shoot

Studio Fashion Shoot
Fashion photography can be either studio based or on location, I personally prefer working in a studio with people because it’s more relaxed and l feel in more control of how I execute my initial ideas. I feel that genre conventions for fashion photography have a wide variation and it is an area of photography where experimentation takes place. fashion and advertising often overlap and a lot of the time the fashion ‘product’ isn’t the primary focus in the image. Instead the entire image is the focus; the model, clothes, background, lighting etc. In these images of mine, I drew on the conventions of having models with mundane expressions and the clothing to be seen as being used in the images. I also included a bold, contrasting background against the models as a more colourful background is eye-catching for a viewer of the advertisement/fashion product.
